What Side Effects Can Antidepressants Trigger?

Different antidepressants come with various side effects, ranging from common to rare. You may or may not experience these, and some may diminish over time.

How Do These Side Effects Affect Me?

Antimuscarinic Effects

These stem from altered acetylcholine levels and can include blurred vision, constipation, dry mouth, and rapid heartbeat, among others.

Lowered Alertness

This may impair your ability to drive or perform skilled tasks, especially when you first start medication.

Diabetes

Prolonged use of SSRIs or tricyclics can increase diabetes risk, particularly for those over 30.

Gut Bleeding

Rare but more likely in those over 80, causing doctors to recommend alternative medications.

Hypomania or Mania

Could indicate bipolar disorder and may necessitate a medication switch.

Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome

A rare, severe neurological disorder with symptoms like high temperature and tremors, requiring immediate medical attention.

Serotonin Syndrome

Rare but serious; symptoms include headaches, high temperature, and high blood pressure.

Sexual Issues

Varied and can include delayed or spontaneous orgasms and reduced libido.

SIADH

A rare, fatal condition causing low sodium levels, resulting in symptoms like confusion and hallucinations.

Suicidal Feelings

Oral Health

Long-term use of drugs causing dry mouth can lead to tooth decay.
