Pregabalin
Pregabalin is an anticonvulsant drug that is also used to manage generalised anxiety disorder. It works by affecting neurotransmitters in the brain, thereby reducing anxiety symptoms.
Although effective, it can also lead to dependency if misused, and may have side effects like dizziness or drowsiness.
Buspirone
Buspirone is specifically designed to treat chronic anxiety, as opposed to short-term anxiety disorders. Unlike benzodiazepines, it is less sedating and has a lower risk of dependency. Common side effects can include headaches, nausea, and dizziness.
Other Medications
In addition to these, you might be prescribed :
- Antidepressants : Certain types of antidepressants, like SSRIs and SNRIs, are commonly used to treat anxiety disorders.
- Beta-Blockers : These are often used off-label for anxiety, especially for situational anxiety (e.g., performance anxiety). They work by blocking the effects of adrenaline, which reduces symptoms like rapid heartbeat.
- Low-Dose Antipsychotics : Though not commonly used, low doses of antipsychotics like quetiapine can be prescribed for severe anxiety.
