What is Shortness of Breath?

Shortness of breath, medically known as dyspnea, is a sensation of uncomfortable breathing or the feeling that one cannot draw a deep breath. This common experience can be both alarming and discomforting, often described as an intense tightness in the chest or a feeling of suffocation.

Why Might We Feel It?

From a mental health standpoint, shortness of breath is frequently associated with anxietyand panic disorders. During periods of heightened anxiety or a panic attack, the body's "fight or flight" response is triggered, leading to rapid breathing (hyperventilation) that can cause or worsen the sensation of shortness of breath. Stress, anxiety, and panic can create a cycle where the fear of experiencing shortness of breath can, in turn, trigger further episodes.
