How to File a Grievance Against the Police
If you're dissatisfied with your experience with the police, you have a couple of options :
- Submit a complaint online via the official police website.
- Visit your local police station and request to speak with the duty officer.
It's advisable to voice your concerns within a year of the incident. However, if you believe you've been subject to discrimination, you might need to file a claim within six months.
Where to Lodge Your Complaint
Most grievances are managed by the local police force. You can file your complaint :
- In person, by visiting the police station.
- In writing, addressed to the police station.
- Online, via your local police force's website. You can find links to these websites online.
- For severe complaints, the matter will be escalated to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), previously known as the Independent Police Complaints Commission.
If You're Unsatisfied with the Outcome
You'll be informed about the appeal process if you're not content with the resolution.
